Since 1957, St - Viateur Bagel has been perfecting it’s bagels. Not only is this the most famous bagel place in MTL but has also caught the attention of the world. Joe Morena and his three sons continue on the family friends legacy of running the business and their story is one worth listening to.
In 1953, Myer Lewkowicz arrived to Canada straight from Germany. Coming from a poor Jewish family from the countrysides of Poland, coming to Canada was a big culture shock. Lewkowicz had lived a rough life as he was arrested and thrown into a concentration camp. He later was living in Germany up until he was discovered by the Jewish Immigration Aid Services of Canada in 1952. His first job in MTL was at a bakery where they specialized in bagels. Within five years, him and his wife decided to open up their own bagel shop which is now the famous St -Viateur Bagel.
Lewkowicz and Joe Morena became business partners over the years. Morena meet Lewkowicz at the young age of 15. Soon Lewkowicz taught young Morena the ins and outs of running a bagel business. After the passing of Lewkowicz 1994, Morena brought on his sons to join and help run the business. The business has been thriving since its opening! Celebrities have visited this establishment, brands have done collaborations and more!
